Movember: A Month for Men's Mental Health Awareness 


Movember is more than just a month dedicated to growing moustaches; it’s a global movement that raises awareness of men’s health issues, particularly mental health. As we embrace this initiative every November, it’s crucial to focus on why men’s mental health deserves our attention and support, especially in Hong Kong.

Why Focus on Men's Mental Health?


Men’s mental health is often overlooked, yet it plays a vital role in overall well-being. Mental health issues can significantly impact men’s quality of life, relationships, and productivity. By focusing on men’s mental health during Movember, we can encourage open discussions, reduce stigma, and promote the importance of seeking help.


Statistics on Men's Mental Health in Hong Kong


A study by the Hong Kong Mental Morbidity Survey found that around 16.2% of men reported experiencing depressive symptoms, yet many do not seek help. According to the Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, only about 20% of men experiencing mental health issues seek professional help, often due to societal stigma and cultural expectations.


The male suicide rate in Hong Kong has been steadily increasing since 2020, currently at 19.6 per 100,000 males, which is more than double the female suicide rate. In 2023, 65% of suicide cases in Hong Kong were among men (HKJC Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, 2024).

 

Why Men Are Less Likely to Seek Support


Cultural Norms: In many Asian cultures, including Hong Kong, traditional views often dictate that men should be strong and stoic, leading to the belief that expressing vulnerability is a sign of weakness.


Stigma: Many men fear being judged or labelled as "weak" if they admit to struggling with mental health issues. This stigma can prevent them from reaching out for help.


Lack of Awareness: Some men may not recognize the signs of mental health issues or believe they can handle their problems alone, leading to isolation.


Self-Reliance: Some men tend to want to solve their problems independently. They may not want to burden others around them, admit they need support, or may not know who they can turn to for appropriate help. 


How We Can Support Men's Mental Health


Encourage Open Conversations: Create a safe space for men to talk about their feelings without fear of judgment. Encourage discussions about mental health in casual settings, such as among friends or family.


Promote Help-Seeking: Normalize seeking help by sharing resources and information about mental health services available in Hong Kong. Remind men that reaching out for support is a strength, not a weakness.


Check In Regularly: Make it a habit to check in on the men in your life. A simple message or phone call can show that you care and are there to listen.


Participate in Movember Activities: Engage in Movember initiatives, such as growing a moustache, participating in fundraising events, or spreading awareness on social media. These activities can help foster a sense of community and support.


Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the mental health challenges men face in Hong Kong and share this knowledge with others. Awareness is the first step toward reducing stigma and encouraging support.


Movember serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of men’s mental health, particularly in Hong Kong. By raising awareness, breaking the stigma, and providing support, we can create a culture where men feel empowered to speak up about their mental health struggles.
